Selecting a pool table light for your game room is not tricky, but is probably a bit more complicated than you think.
The most important thing you need to be aware of is the overall lighting scheme of the space, and how it will affect players at the table. You see, it’s best to have the brightest light in the room focused over the pool table during its use. If you have too much bright light anywhere else then you will risk washing out visibility by creating confusing cross-shadows or distractions to the eyes. This makes it very hard for a player to focus on any actual shot, and it’s the main reason most pool halls are kept dark except for the lighting over the tables.
Your next concern should be functionality. There is an optimal height for hanging a pool table light that gives the best dispersal of light and also keeps the players from hitting their heads on the fixture. Most basements have an extremely low ceiling, and if you choose to hang a standard pool table light from a low ceiling you will find it hanging uncomfortably close to the table, making use of the table very awkward. You can get around this by installing recessed lighting direction into the ceiling panels. It might not look as classy as a standard pool light, but it will serve its function better, and be less of a distraction as well.
Your final concern is matching the theme of your game room. There are many themes you can research from “traditional pool hall” through “smoky tavern” to “classy up-town”. Regardless of the theme you want for your room, it is imperative that your pool table light matches it! It will be a large fixture and possible an eye-catcher, especially of you chose something with stained-glass. The last thing you want, though, is to choose a fixture that you LOVED in the store, but that turned out to be a horrible choice once you got in hanging in your game room. Your best choice could very well be a bland and non-descript lighting fixture that blends with the room and lets the other design features stand out for themselves.
Choosing the right pool table light for your pool room is an important process, so be sure to give careful consideration to it. When you’re finally ready to entertain, you want your guests to be envious of the whole space, not distracted by awkwardness or a gaudy display.
