Purchasing a Fabulous Wood Dining Set

Probably the most rewarding kitchen dining set you can purchase to warm up your room, is one made of wood.  Metal and glass constructed tables or chair simply don’t offer that personal touch that speaks of home.  Usually, like with most things in life, you do get what you pay for.  There is however, a wide range in furniture pricing, and you don’t always have to sell the farm to afford quality.

To start with, avoid any table and chair sets made from softwoods, such as pine.  I would recommend going with hardwoods, as their strength and durability outperform the softwoods.  While softwood furniture may have an appealing look and finish, they will scratch and gouge easier, and will never have that solid, quality feel of woods like maple, cherry or oak.

Consider the actual construction of the chairs and table.  For upholstered chairs, all four corners of the chair frame should be reinforced with blocking that is screwed and glued.   All doweling or dovetail style construction should be glued solid, without play, and have a smooth finish.  Runs in the varnish and glue applications are likely indicative of a lesser quality product.  The table and chairs should sit firmly and squarely on the floor without rocking or squeaking, when weight is applied.  Overall, look for a solid, confident feel, when selecting your set.

Any solid wood seat chair set, without a doubt, calls for chair pads cushions.  If the set came with the cushions, inspect for quality.  Look for loose threads, indicating a lesser quality construct.  Test the actual padding for comfort and thickness; ideally the padding will be a memory foam.  Check the underside of the cushion for some kind of anti-slip bottom.  A smooth varnished wooden chair seat will create a slippery surface for a basic cushion.  Ideally the chair pad will be tied down at he back, or have some kind of an elastic overlap strap or skirt, such as with typical bar stool cushions.  Ready made cushions can be purchased separately from the dining set, or you can have them custom made with the fabric of your choice.
