Outdoor flood lights should be part of any lighting scheme that you use for your landscape. Most lighting designs focus on the pathway lights, patio lights or deck lights. But smart homeowners know the true value of having outdoor flood lights employed around their home. These flood lights not only provide style and a unique lighting design to highlight your home at night, but they also increase security for you and your family.
What Kinds Of Outdoor Flood Lights Are Available?
Outdoor flood lights are usually manufactured using either plastic or metal. The material used in construction has to do with the way the flood light will be used as well as where it will be employed in your back yard. Usually the plastic flood lights are employed near the ground. These outdoor lights are usually attached to a stake and then inserted into the ground so that they can provide an uplighting effect.
Metal flood lights are typically used to provide a wide area of light and increase the security of a very dark area. To do this, they are mounted on a wall or other vertical surface and then pointed downward.
What Light Sources Are Used With Outdoor Flood Lights?
There are four types of light sources used with flood lights. The first type is the old standard incandescent light bulb. This is most common, but typically uses up the most energy of any other alternative.
Another choice is the compact fluorescent flood light. These operate much like their incandescent cousins, but actually save a lot more money due to their decreased power consumption.
LED flood lights are another option. The LED (or Light Emitting Diode) flood lights consume 60 percent less than their standard lighted options. This has a tremendous effect on your finances.
The fourth option is solar flood lights. Solar flood lights are the perfect option for most back yards as they can be placed anywhere that sun can reach them. And since they store the sun’s energy during the day and draw from it at dusk, the consumption of power from your power grid is nil. And thus they have zero daily operating costs.
