How to Splice a Printer USB Cable

Splicing a usb cable can be a great way to extend a cable that is to short, or to just repair a broken cable that may have been cut or in many cases chewed by a cat or dog.

The first step to splicing a cable is to cut off the outer layer and uncover all of the smaller wires. A good way to do this is with a wire stripper which can be purchased for as little as five dollars at the local general goods or hardware store.

After the smaller wires are exposed their coverings must be removed. This is a much more difficult task than removing the outer covering. Some wire strippers are small enough to remove the outer covering on these wires but not many, and even if it is the right size many times these wires will break in the process. One technique that works well is melting off the plastic covering with either a wood burner or a soldering iron. A Soldering iron can be purchased for as little as a few dollars at most stores.

After the wires have been bared on both of the cables they of must be matched to their correspondin colors and then twisted together. This part can take a little while and will be difficult without practice. After these wires are twisted together with their matching colors the bared wire must be covered back up.

There are a number of different ways to covered bared wire. The best method is with heat shrink tubing that can be obtained from an electrical store or online at Amazon.com. With tubing the tubing has to be slid over the wire before twisting it together. Then when the wires are twisted you slide the small tubes back to cover the bared metal and heat them with a blow dryer or another heat source. The tubing will then shrink up protecting the wire very well.

An easier method of protecting bared wires is electric tape. After all of the wires are twisted together simply wrap electric tape around all of the small wires and then around all of the wires together.

After this is done the printer usb cable should work good as new. If the cable has been fixed with electric tape it is a good idea to go get some heat shrink tubing of the proper size, because electric tape is only a temporary fix.
