Lovers of sea glass tend to lovers of all things beautiful and so they know the value of finding – or making – the a lovely piece of sea glass. In fact, they are partial to bracelets and rings and necklaces that include pieces of sea glass.
When a few basic selection and designs tips are followed, sea glass jewelry can literally astound you with its exquisite beauty.
Don’t make the mistake of using tumbled glass to create the jewelry. Genuine sea glass jewelry is made of genuine sea glass – that is, sea glass that has been polished and worked over by the ocean itself. There is nothing inherently wrong with tumbled glass – chunks of glass that have been polished in a machine called a tumbler – but it lacks the subtle nuances of the real thing.
In other words, you have to start by walking a shore line – either on a large lake or the sea or a river bed. There are certainly plenty of opportunities to buy sea glass online – there is no end of retailers willing to take your money, but the problem is you are not assured that you are getting actual sea glass as opposed to some that has been smoothed over mechanically.
What’s the difference? Well, sea glass will have more personality. There will be small patterns in the glass left over by grains of sand. Some collectors consider this to be essential. No two pieces of real sea glass look the same.
Once you have collected some glass you have to evaluate its grade. Should it be used for jewelry? Remember that you are dealing with a fragile substance – glass breaks and scratches easily! If you have a piece with the smallest of cracks – nothing more than a hairline fracture, really – then it will be susceptible to more breaking. Avoid this when you begin isolating those pieces that you want to use for jewelry-making.
Be sure the glass is perfectly smooth. Not just the top and bottom, but also the sides should be examined. The edges should be rounded and present no sharpness that could injure a finger. Study it carefully for flaws that you don’t want in the finished necklace or ankle bracelet.
The key here is patience. While you might get lucky and find lots of sea glass samples, you will probably not find so many that are perfect for making jewelry. You are going to have to take your time. Remember that the results will be worth it!
