Fixing A Slow Running Computer

Getting a faster PC can be achieved by upgrading the hardware (RAM) to give the computer a boost. However, it makes more sense to resolve the problems that cause a slow running computer. This article looks at 5 key points to consider when investigating PC performance issues.

The amount of disk space being used: It is very easy to not spot that your hard drives are getting packed up with MP3 files, torrent feeds and temporary files. Once a drive goes over 95% full then it will cause Windows to grind to a halt. Clear out at least 10% free space to allow enough virtual memory allocation.

The state of the drives: If the drives get overly fragmented then Windows struggles to make multiple calls to the drive. Run a disk defragmentation tool (Window’s own tool will suffice) to collate the fragments and facilitate single disk access calls.

The presence of a virus: You could have a slow running computer because a trojan virus on your PC is hogging processing power and your internet connection. Get the latest virus definitions for your software and deep scan the entire drive (this includes memory sticks and external drives – which are prone to virus infection as they move from PC to PC).

The volume of running applications: Open Task Manager and check how many processes are running. Ask yourself if they are all needed. Close down those ones that use a good deal of the memory and/or check the software producer’s site for known issues/performance patches. Use the MSConfig tools or 3rd party services like Reimage PC Repair to optimize the services that are run when Windows is booting up.

The default performance settings: Many folk don’t check the Performance Options (generally under the Control Panel / System /Advanced Tab) too often. This is an easy way of tuning how you want Windows to prioritize its CPU and memory management. Keeping a paging file/virtual memory size between 1.5 and 3 times the system RAM size also helps Windows run fast.
