Solar lights, just like any other type of lighting, differ in output and energy requirements. Thus when considering batteries for them, whether for replacement or as a backup, it is important to match that battery to the light’s specifications.

Solar batteries for solar lights are rechargeable, and come in one of three types. For small solar lights, such as those found in path lights, Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) or Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries are typically chosen. These dry cell batteries are slowly charged by photovoltaic cells, and depending on the capacity, can usually last for several hours of continuous use. Comparing the two, NiMH are more expensive but have a bigger capacity than an equivalent-sized NiCd. They can also be charged immediately after being drained a little, unlike NiCds which have to be drained almost completely before recharging (because of the so-called memory effect).

The second and third types are valve-regulated lead-acid batteries, somewhat similar in appearance to common car batteries. Because of their output, they are usually charged with a 12 volt solar charger. One is called the AGM, or Absorbed Glass Mat battery. This name refers to the material that is placed in between the plates. Their advantage is a low 2% discharge rate, and a longer lasting battery which does not spill its acid.

The second one is called the GEL battery. The name refers to the Silica gel that is added to the acid, which turns it into a solid mass. Therefore they do not spill their acid even if they crack, and the evaporation of electrolytes is reduced. Gel batteries are thus safer. However, they are more expensive than AGMs and cannot be fast charged.

These three types are all effective solar batteries for solar lights. Consider their pros and cons, as well as their charging characteristics, so you can buy the battery that is especially suited for your own purposes.
